Welfare
We pride ourselves with treating our pekin ducks with care, respect and even a measure of affection.
Animal welfare is a simple subject – you must;
- Understand the needs to animals to ensure they lead healthy and comfortable lives
- Provide for those needs
- Check the wellbeing of the animals regularly and make improvements to their circumstances as necessary
Flocks of domesticated Pekin ducks need;
- Protection from predators
- Protection from extreme weather
- Adequate clean and dry space
- Wholesome and healthy food
- Clean water for drinking and preening
- Protection from disease
We meet the needs of our ducks by
- Housing them in large, airy, well-lit barns where the floors are covered with clean dry straw each day
- Providing them with a constant supply of natural, balanced feed whose main ingredient is wheat grown in the local area and contains no bonemeal nor additives
- Providing a constant flow of clean water for drinking and preening
- Limiting the exposure to pathogenic bacteria and viruses allowing our ducks to grow strong and healthy without the need for antibiotics and other medications
Our highly skilled and experienced stockpersons check the wellbeing of our ducks each day in line with our detailed code of practice. This is regularly audited by DEFRA (Ministry of Agriculture) and our major customers.
